Kim Kardashion Kimono Faux Pas!

You must have heard all the controversy that Kim Kardashian caused when she decided to name her shape up brand Kimono. She was accused of cultural appropriation and insensitivity. The Kimono is the traditional garment of Japan. Kimono are traditionally hand made of silk and consist of many rectangular pieces sewn together to form a shapeless robe-like garment worn with a belt.

Silk has been used for garments for over 5,000 years in China. The finest silk in the world is the silk produced by the Bombyx Mori Caterpillars who only feed on Mulberry leaves.

Each silkworm cocoon is made of 1 thread of raw silk. It takes 5,000 silkworms to make a single Kimono. Add the time consuming and delicate handiwork needed to sew a Kimono and you can understand why a traditional Kimono in Japan can cost a minimum of $1000.
